Why a Coordinate Measuring Machine
Various types of probes used in CMMs, include mechanical, optical, laser, and white light. Depending on the machine, the probe position gets controlled by an operator or the machine. CMMs specify a probe's position by its displacement from a reference position in a three-dimensional coordinate system. Many machines probe angle can be controlled allowing the measurement of unreachable surfaces.
The typical 3D "bridge" CMM allows a probe to move along three axes. Sensors monitor the position of the probe with micrometre precision. When the probe detects a particular location on the object, the machine samples the three position sensors, thus measuring triangulating the location of one point on the component. This process is repeated as necessary to produce a "point cloud" which describes the surface areas of interest.
